Churches: Brainstorm 30 days of social media posts in 30 minutes

If you want to quickly fill your church’s content calendar, ask yourself these ten questions when brainstorming ideas:

Are there any holidays this month?

  • Holiday Insights is a great website for official holidays and daily observations. The website breaks down the meaning behind the observation which is helpful when determining if it’s appropriate for your church.

  • Don’t forget to research upcoming Christian holidays. They are not always featured on public holiday lists.

Do we have any events this month?

  • Refer to your church’s event calendar. Do you need to promote any events in the upcoming month?

  • Do you need to promote any events happening in the next 60 days?

Are there any major announcements?

  • Reach out to your church staff and ministry leaders for major announcements like:

    • Changes to events (dates and times)

    • Unplanned meetings or events

    • Special observances

Are there any updates from our ministry partners?

  • Share updates from the many ministries at your church. Share what they have been working on, or what they plan to be working on in the future.

  • PRO TIP: Ask your ministry leaders to submit monthly stories via Google Drive so the social media team will have a database of stories to pull from each month.

Are there any life/professional celebrations?

Are there any major celebrations your congregation should be aware of? Anniversaries, birthdays, retirements, graduations, etc.

Who can we spotlight on social media this month?

Every church should spotlight a member in their church each week. To spotlight a member for the upcoming month, select four people you would like to feature on social media (one person a week).

They can be general members, ministry leaders, staff, etc. Take their photo (or ask them for one) and share on social why you appreciate them.

Alternative: Ask them to share their testimony. If they are shy, ask them to share what God has taught them this week.

Do we need to highlight any historical events?

Refer to your church’s history. Are there any notable moments in history?

Are there any posts from last month requiring updates?

Did you post a great story last month? Give your audience a follow-up to the story. For example: If you requested donations for a community organization, set aside time in the following week or month to share a follow-up story. How did the donation benefit an individual or family?

What is the content focus for the month?

What is the sermon topic for this month? Is your church celebrating a churchwide event in the upcoming month? Dedicate at least one day a week to promote these types of items.

What questions have we received from our audience?

What are your most frequently asked questions? If your audience is asking the same question over and over again, it could be because (1) you have not communicated enough, or (2) your communication is not clear. Take time to answer these questions.

What are the most clicked items on your website or in your email newsletter?

Use your website or newsletter to discover the content your audience is most interested in.

Email: Email management sites like Mailchimp and Constant Contact each provide a reporting feature for each email sent. Refer to the ‘most clicked’ tab for the content your audience is interested in.

Web: Look towards your Web Host’s in-app analytics feature or use Google Analytics to see which pages your audience visits the most. Create content pointing people to these pages.
